Mull It Over 036: We Back Up
Mull It Over returns after a short hiatus with a full series focused on the biggest night in the music calendar - the Northern Ireland Music Prize.
“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.” - Oasis. And me.
It will feature in newsletter format however, and most likely on digital radio. Welcome BACK to Mull It Over. After caning it with weekly articles for the guts of a year - work, life and the world’s cutest tiny human girl (and being lazy) finally got the best of me. But do not fear, the intellectual, witty, charming and acerbic tone you’ve come to expect from your favourite friendly, neighbourhood newsletter is (as Gary Barlow would put it) Back For Good. And to top it off I have a bumper schedule planned for this last dash to the end of the year, all focused on the culmination our thriving local scene - the Northern Ireland Music Prize. So let me press PAUSE on Nicky Byrne’s new podcast where he interviews his old bandmate Brian McFadden on why he left Westlife 20 years ago and press PLAY on Mull It Over, baby.
Backstreet’s Back. Alright.
Here’s what we’ve got coming up.
Northern Ireland Music Prize - Field Report
The biggest night of the year is nearly upon us. On 13th November the who’s who of Whoville will descend on Belfast’s iconic Ulster Hall for a celebration of music from this region. With categories including Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Live Act of the Year and Video of the Year and the prestigious Legend Award to be handed out, expect the champagne to be flowing no matter who wins. To top it off, yours truly will be in attendance and in lieu of a boring recap of the night’s performances, expect me to involve myself directly in the shenanigans in the pure Gonzo journalism style that you have come to love from me and/or Hunter S. Thompson.
NIMP Album of the Year - Roundup + Review
Thirteen albums have made the shortlist for this year’s Album of the Year at the Northern Ireland Music Prize and I have been listening with intent. Suffice to say I have some opinions and next week you can expect a full Mull It Over brief on all of the albums nominated for the night’s most prestigious prize. I’m also going to go out on a limb and announce the first ever Mull It Over pre-NIMP Album of the Year. Which is probably more exciting (and certainly more important) than the real thing anyway. A review of my pick for best album will follow. Keep your eyes peeled.
Mull It Over Live 004: NIMP Special
Yes, the now iconic Mull It Over Live show will return for its fourth edition exclusively on Belfast Built Digital Radio and broadcasting to the masses from East Belfast’s famed Banana Block. If you missed my honeyed tones spilling out from your Air Pod Pros then fear not, I will be taking you on a whistle-stop tour of the Northern Ireland Music Prize and spinning a track from each of the nominated albums. Expect outstanding music and shite talk in equal measure. I will post the broadcast date on the Mull It Over Instagram page when that is confirmed.
So, that’s what the end of year dash looks like for Mull It Over. Thank you for sticking with me through the short hiatus. It was only a month but after a frequency of an article a week for 9 months it felt a lot longer. I somehow managed to gain subscribers during the break. Maybe they like it when I say nothing at all - that makes four boy band references in one article. We are so back.
As always, thank you for subscribing. I’ll see you at the Ulster Hall in November and in the meantime you can listen to the Mull It Over Spotify Playlist below:
