Mull It Over 034: The Single File
It's Bandcamp Friday, so here's ten essential releases from Northern Ireland to soundtrack your weekend. Featuring Susie Blue and Enola Gay.
Happy Bandcamp Friday! In a happy accident of me arbitrarily deciding to publish this newsletter on a Friday each week, it also happens to be the same day where, on the first Friday of each month some months, Bandcamp waives its revenue share and artists themselves receive full commission for their wares. Every month feels like it could be the last one, such is the state of the independent music ecosystem these days. However, while it is here, I will continue to expertly curate a list of all the latest, greatest and most essential releases from Northern Ireland, so you don’t have to. You should be paying for this.
Talk about a brat summer. Back and sounding more like the brutalist extension on the Ulster Museum than usual is Enola Gay with Cortana. Still riding high on the shoegaze elements that made Cold before it so lethargically gorgeous, Cortana keeps things fresh with some spoken word post-punkiness than is just so very 2024.
And Susie Blue is back, finally. After posting a video on her Instagram page of her Glastonbury set from a few years ago which may or may not feature me, protein shake flask full of gin in hand, dancing very badly - she hits us with the exceedingly fun Stop at any time. To my great discredit, I haven’t managed to see a Susie Blue show since that Glastonbury. After some short breaks between her latest releases, hopefully this is a longer period of activity with some live shows to follow. I’ll see you there.
Here’s ten of the best from August, enjoy!
Enola Gay - Cortana
Susie Blue - Stop at any time
Goth Fight Cage - I’m Going Out. / Stop + See
Ethan Hollan - Valentine
Franklin - B.A.T.O.F
