Mull It Over 027: The Single File
It's the first Friday of the month, so here's ten essential releases from Northern Ireland to soundtrack your weekend. Featuring Enola Gay and Sasha Samara.
Hi and welcome to the latest edition of The Single File, where each month I bring you the best single (and EPs and albums, but ignore that - it’s a good title) releases from Northern Ireland, based entirely on my own homegrown, infallible taste. The reason I started this feature was that once upon a time Bandcamp Fridays took place on the first Friday of each month and I could link directly to artists’ profiles over there, so they could, in turn, enjoy the full whack of revenue from any purchases made on their music on that particular day. The frequency of Bandcamp Fridays has slowed of late and now only occurs on some select months out of the year. I wrote about the confusing future that lay ahead for Bandcamp last year for another publication.
Regardless, I will still endeavour to bring you ten of the best from Northern Ireland on the first Friday of each month. Bandcamp Friday or not, it is still the best platform for getting money directly into artists’ pockets, which in turn makes its way to funding the production of even more fabulous, independent, grassroots music - which is why we’re all here anyway. Think of it like John Maynard Keynes’ take on the multiplier effect in economics - embodied in the great US infrastructure projects of the early 20th Century - like the Hoover Dam, which comprised the New Deal, pulling the United States out of The Great Depression under the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Wait, what?
Here’s ten of the best from June. Enjoy!
Enola Gay - Cold
Longstryde - Superhuman
(*based in Dublin)
Gareth Dunlop - Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know
sasha samara - simmer
THOM SOUTHERN - there’s no easy way out
And So I Watch You From Afar - North Coast Megafauna
Lemonade Shoelace - Violet’s Song
Beauty Sleep - Big Sky
Arvo Party - OPTICS
PORTS - Wait Forever
And that’s it for the latest edition of The Single File. I hope you find a song or two to soundtrack your weekend beer or wine. I’m off to Stendhal, as I imagine a lot of you are too. Come say hello. I’m sure I’ll find something to write about across the weekend. Happy Friday!
